Do I Need the Test?
Most people who apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or British citizenship must pass the Life in the UK Test. However, some people are exempt. This page gives you a simple overview. It is not legal advice – always check the official UK government guidance for your own case.
Who usually needs the test?
Adults aged 18–64 applying for:
- Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), or
- British citizenship
People with qualifying visas who are settling permanently in the UK.
Who is usually exempt?
- Under 18 or 65 and over.
- People with a long-term physical or mental condition that makes it impossible to take the test (with medical evidence).
- Certain routes where the test has already been passed before (e.g. using the same pass for citizenship after ILR).
Simple Decision Guide
Question 1: Are you applying for ILR or British citizenship?
– If no → You probably do not need the test yet.
– If yes → Go to Question 2.
Question 2: Are you between 18 and 64 years old?
– If no → You may be exempt.
– If yes → Go to Question 3.
Question 3: Do you have a long-term condition that makes learning or taking the test impossible, and do you have medical evidence?
– If yes → You may be able to apply for an exemption.
– If no → You will probably need to take the Life in the UK Test.
